Skylands Odyssey

Tell me, O moose, of that ingenious hero who travelled far and wide after he had sacked the famous town of Troyville. Many servers did he visit, and many were the nations with whose manners and custom settings he was acquainted; moreover he suffered much by sea while trying to save his own life and bring his blockheads safely home; but do what he might he could not save his blockheads, for they perished through their own sheer folly in eating the donuts of the Block-god Hyperdave; (Donuts. Is there anything they can't do?) So the god prevented them from ever reaching home. D'oh!

Alright Brain...It's all up to you. Trying is the first step towards failure.

But first...a few rules to play by. Bear in mind that I and others spent long hours creating this world and we intended it for many players to enjoy. Not following the rules not only spoils the fun for you, but also for others who might follow you.

  1. Enjoy the adventure. If something seems impossible, or you die too quickly, consider a different strategy. Maybe there is a special survival trick or something you overlooked. But at the same time, this isn’t a server for beginners.  If you aren’t familiar with some of the lesser known tricks of the game, you may find this adventure very frustrating and we don’t want whiner, shouting “Help me!” all the time. See Rule #2.

  2. Don’t ask for help, you won’t get it. Everyone should be on their own, making their own way through the challenges. Teaming up is allowed, but please, do not help players who are behind you in the adventure. That spoils the challenge for them. If they are truly stuck, perhaps offer a hint as to how to progress. Telling someone exactly how to pass a challenge will result in being kicked or banned.

  3. Absolutely no hacking or other game cheats. This is intended to be a challenge and be fun for the legitimate player without cheating. Also as a member of Revenge of the Players (RoP) hackers will get banned not only from this RoP server, but a lot of others as well. But I suppose if you’re a hacker, you aren’t reading these rules are you?

  4. Do not ask to be staff. This is a special adventure server. Once you complete the adventure, you can choose to stay around and build beyond the end of the quest finish, watch other players work their way through it, or leave with the satisfaction that you made it to the end!  SPECIAL NOTE: Unlike the predecessor, Skylands Adventure, this server invites you to buld new challenges for the players who follow you if you so desire. See below for details.

  5. Do not craft benches or portals. You don’t need them until you finish. You are given specific items when you spawn in to start. Use them wisely. Do not abuse our generosity by dying on purpose to get more stuff. Everyone is given enough to succeed, or given the chance to craft and forage when necessary. (That right there is a hint folks)

TECHNICAL NOTE: This map uses a lot of one way doors.  These doors have a block on the opposite side from where you stand but should still let you pass through them.  If you find that you cannot pass forward through them, try logging out and back in.
And now, ON TO THE ADVENTURE…

Your first challenge is to escape from the spawn island. But keep reading if you’d like some tips from Homer, and what comes AFTER the adventure.
Tip: Things you need will be made available to you as you need them. Look out for them as clues to solve the challenges.

Tip: There are signs placed to offer some help. Don’t ignore them. Yellow signs are journal entries from Odysseus. You might want to listen to him for advice, he’s done this before.

Tip: If you REALLY need advanced help, Skylands Arena hosts a help center. Find it on that server for some relevant tips when you see a sign directing you there.

General tips from Homer

:
"When a fire starts to burn there's a lesson you must learn, something-something then you'll see, you'll avoid catastrophe, d'oh"

"Always remember that you're representing your country… I guess what I'm saying is, don't mess up this world the way you messed up your room."

Skylands Odyssey:  Where YOU Add to the Adventure

Upon completing all the current quests and challenges, you are invited to take ownership of an area and build a challenge of your own design to extend the adventure. You will be granted at least 3 protected zones and must creatively get players from the left side to the right, using their brains or their skills.  Ask Jemni for details once you finish.

If you don’t want to mess with making a challenge, you are free to freebuild beyond the challenge area.

Sounds like fun.
I can’t say I’m very good at challenges… what sort of challenges do you even mean? The only kind I can think of is the trivia (I’m alright at that I guess) from SAdventure and handcar thingies…
I could do some exploring, though. (Especially if I get a jetpack - I love exploring the sky!)

Sounds fun. If I understand correctly, there will be player-made challenges from spawn to somewhere and then something. Is that correct? I can make a pretty nice donkey parkour and I have an idea for a barely lit maze I could do.

Yep, mazes and donkey parkour would both be acceptable. I’m basically taking stuff I thought up while doing Skylands Adventure but didn’t have a place to put it, and then more that I’ve thought of since. Trivia questions work nicely for maze shortcuts, or simply as the correct path onward. Skylands Adventure had several challenges that didn’t involve trivia, or mazes, but pure brainy problem solving. That’s what I really love to add. Making those within the confines of Blockheads is a challenge, but a welcome one.

I guess my one other stipulation with challenges is that I’m not aiming for instant death, or near impossible obstacles. Getting past intense heat is ok now and then, if you prepare the player with food, but I want a variety. And I want a well prepared player to stand a reasonable chance of surviving the whole thing to the end. A noob who hasn’t even done the single player tutorial however…might have a harder time of it.

Hmm… is it possible you’ve already created this world under the 1.6.1 beta?
Oh I’m dying to know what that last minute feature is that Dave tweeted about!

Is there anything in the staff group? I’ll check it later when I’m not on tapatalk.

I have a question regarding the 1.6.1 update, are the world features and custom rules only applicable to new worlds or can u also apply them on existing ones?

Ooh, I might be able to help build a fancy shamancy Donkeh Parkour! But don’t take my word for it. ._. I’m a busy woman, though certain people don’t believe that. And, tbh, I often forget about stuff I have to do while playing on other servers…

You can only have custom rules on a custom rules world. All worlds made before 1.6.1 are “vanilla” worlds, and worlds will have the option to be either CR or vanilla upon creation in a 1.6.1 game.
Dave did tweet once that he might make a one-way switch from vanilla to CR available for pre-1.6.1 worlds, but it’s unknown whether or not he will do that for sure.

Woohoo, can’t wait to join!

After much too long of a delay, Skylands Odyssey is now OPEN for all!

Read the first post for the rules and tips. It’s the same as the server welcome page which you may then skip to the adventure.

Thanks. It has taken months of effort by many players. To be honest, I often let it sit and didn’t make much progress on it for weeks at a time, but I finally got off my blockbutt and did it. Looking forward to seeing what new finishers might want to create at the “end”.

I have updated post #2 here with a Photo scavenger hunt. Once you get far enough, vote and select as many images as you have found. Any part of the image is fine if you can tell what it is. In other words, you don’t have to try and reveal the whole volcano. That would be very difficult.

We have a new challenge!! (or three)

The player Name’s Cat has nearly completed this absolute masterpiece you have to see to believe. I can’t show you up close images or it will spoil the challenge. But it comes after greeting Smeegle’s Medusa, and winding your way up from Hades.

This is one of the many must-see creations on Odyssey. The scale and beauty of it is outstanding with the added fun of a riddle challenge :+1:t2:

Wow! That has to be a FB feature. Will come by at some point and take a look. In the meantime, could you check Cat would be okay with that, once it’s complete?
